ICD-11 in practice
ICD-11 Today: What Clinicians Need to Know
ICD-11 became the international standard in 2022, but countries are adopting it at very different rates. Here’s where the transition stands, where to find the official ICD-11, and why ICD-10 codes are still widely used in healthcare.
Is ICD-11 Already Being Used?
ICD-11 officially took effect on January 1, 2022, but adoption varies from country to country.
Many countries still use ICD-10 or a national modification of it while preparing for the transition. Germany, for example, uses ICD-10-GM, while the United States uses ICD-10-CM.

Need to look up a specific code? The WHO mapping tables show how ICD-10 codes correspond to ICD-11. We’ve also compiled the mappings into an easy-to-browse reference, covering ICD-10 codes in F00–F99 and the closest ICD-10 equivalent for every category in ICD-11 Chapter 6.

Most countries have not yet completed the transition to ICD-11. Until a country adopts ICD-11 for routine healthcare, medical records, reporting, and billing continue to use ICD-10 or its national modification.
The transition is also more than a simple code-for-code switch. Some diagnoses were split, others were merged or redefined, and ICD-11 introduced diagnoses that had no direct equivalent in ICD-10.
