Secondary mood syndrome
A syndrome with features of a mood disorder (depression or mania) that is caused by an underlying medical condition (e.g. hypothyroidism, Cushing syndrome, stroke, Parkinson disease).
Symptoms
- Depressed or elevated mood caused by medical condition (also: secondary depression, organic mood disorder, depression from hypothyroidism, mania from Cushing syndrome, mood changes from brain disease)
- Temporal link between mood change and medical disease course (also: mood worsens with disease activity, temporal association of mood and illness, depression onset after medical diagnosis)
- Mood symptoms disproportionate to psychosocial stressors (also: biological cause of depression, mood not explained by life circumstances, organic basis for mood disorder, no adequate psychological explanation)
