Vascular dementia
A dementia disorder caused by cerebrovascular disease, characterized by stepwise or fluctuating cognitive decline often following strokes or transient ischaemic attacks. Deficits in executive function, attention, and processing speed are prominent.
Symptoms
- Psychomotor slowing or agitation (also: Psychomotor slowing, psychomotor agitation, slowed thinking, reduced processing speed, cognitive slowing)
- Executive function impairment (also: Executive function deficits, poor planning, impaired problem solving, difficulty switching tasks, frontal lobe dysfunction)
- Reduced attention and concentration (also: Attention impairment, poor concentration, sustained attention deficits, distractibility, reduced focus)
- Stepwise cognitive decline following vascular event (also: Stepwise cognitive decline, sudden cognitive worsening after stroke, post-stroke cognitive decline, acute-onset dementia after TIA, abrupt cognitive deterioration)
- History of strokes or ischaemic episodes (also: History of stroke, prior ischaemic episodes, TIA in history, cerebrovascular events, previous stroke or mini-stroke)
- History of hypertension or vascular risk factors (also: Hypertension, vascular risk factors, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension, atherosclerosis)
- Focal neurological signs (also: Focal neurological deficits, hemiparesis, dysarthria, gait disturbance, focal neurological symptoms)
- Advanced age at onset (also: Onset in advanced age, elderly patient, late-onset dementia, onset over age 65, older adults)
- Stepwise or irregular course of deterioration (also: Stepwise progression, fluctuating cognitive course, plateaus followed by sudden decline, irregular deterioration, non-linear decline)
